Career guidance during the first year

During the first year, student’s career guidance focuses especially on strengthening the studying skills and study ability. The Orientation to studies course (tutor classes) for first-year students open what university studies include from different perspectives. The student also gets acquainted with the learning objectives and practical instructions of the work placement in his/her field. In the I, as a UAS student course, the student reflects on his or her own educational background and possible previous work experience. Is there anything that could be utilized in the studies? Students also develop their own study skills, including teamworking skills, and learn to identify their own resources. The PSP-discussion with the tutor teacher is an important part of the student’s career guidance. The PSP-discussion will take place during the first, second and third year of studies. The student will discuss the different options of professional studies in the PSP-discussion.

Work placement is an integral part of career development. It is recommended to complete the first work placement, called basic work placement of 10 ECTS after the first study year, especially in engineering and business degree programs. The aim of the basic work placement is to develop working life skills and skills related to the study field. The student learns about the requirements, realities and needs of the working life. The objective is to learn to identify and evaluate the current competences and to identify the development of competence while working.

The work placement in Social work and Nursing is supervised and scheduled in the curriculum. The first work placement period (5-7 weeks) is usually done in the spring of the first Academic year. For nursing students, the work placement begins during the first year of study as learning basic nursing skills. The objective is to familiarize the students with practical work tasks that are important for professional studies, as well as the application of knowledge and skills in working life. Theoretical studies are applied in practice during supervised work placements. Through own choices, the student can acquire skills and in-depth understanding of a particular client group (e.g. eldery), phenomenon or work method. The work placement is unpaid, supervised, goal-oriented and assessed study.

The objective of Centria's music education internship (30 ECTS) is to provide a wide range of skills for working as a music teacher and in the field of music education. The purpose of the work placement is to learn to take responsibility of oneself and the surrounding community as a musician and educator. Centria's music pedagogue program includes 15 ECTS of practical training within teaching and 15 ECTS as other working life training.
