The field of IT is continuously growing and developing, but it is also a creative field where small companies and even individual entrepreneurs can develop successful products and services. Centria University of Applied Sciences offers a bachelor’s degree programme in Information Technology, which is aimed at you who want to become a versatile IT expert and have plenty of interesting work opportunities in the future. In our area, there are exciting work possibilities for IT experts.

The Information Technology programme provides you with extensive knowledge of software engineering and communications. The studies will start from the basics, so previous knowledge or experience from the IT sector is not required. In your studies, you can specialize either in programming technology or in communications and cloud services. The studies will give you strong know-how in the field of IT, starting from the basics, including natural sciences, language and communications skills and project management.

During your studies, you will focus on software engineering. You will gain more expertise in programming, software design and communications. You will learn how to use different IT-related hardware. For example, you will get to know the same hardware and software that companies use in real life, such as Raspberry and Arduino, and Microsoft Visual Studio, Jira and Git. In addition to the theoretical studies, you do practical assignments and participate in different projects. For example, you will spend your 3rd and 4th year studying in Centria’s software factory, where you can practice previously learned subjects in practice by participating in RDI projects or other customer projects. The work is often done in teams in the IT field, so you will also learn teamwork and project working skills during your studies.

The engineer’s work is very practically oriented. All professional studies contain a lot of learning by doing. In our region, many successful companies need experts who understand the possibilities of digitalization. The companies also help us to develop the degree programme and the content of it. Company representatives visit us as guest lecturers and offer work placements and thesis projects for the students. These projects are an excellent way for you to show your expertise and possibly get a summer job in one of the companies. We also co-operate with international parties, such as Cisco, Microsoft, Amazon and ESRI. Centria has a certification centre, where the students can pass the AWS certificates of Amazon. Centria also has an IT laboratory for project learning.

Structure of Studies

The degree programme in Information Technology in Pietarsaari is conducted in English as part-time studies. The studies consist of core studies, profiling studies, which include specialisation studies, optional studies, work placement and a thesis. The scope is 240 ECTS, and the length of the studies is around 4 years. The study methods are multimodal, which means that the studies are organised both online and on campus. The studies also include independent studying and group work. The contact teaching is arranged on Campus Allegro in Pietarsaari 2–3 days a week, and on the other days, students work online.

Studying at Centria UAS is very practical, and you will get many chances to participate in real-life projects together with working life representatives. In addition, work placements are part of the studies. During the work placement, you can practice and increase your know-how in an actual work environment. Work placements are a great way to show your expertise to a potential employer and get a summer job, for example. You can also practice your skills in our software factory and IT laboratory.

The bachelor's thesis is a large (15 ECTS) development or research project that usually takes place during the last study year. The purpose of the thesis is to prove that you have a good command of software engineering related theory and processes, and you can apply these in practice. The students usually do their thesis for a specific company. The thesis project, together with the work placement, introduces the student to practical work-life duties already during their studies. It is also the first step towards the first permanent position for many of our students. Some typical planning and development projects are, e.g. planning and conducting a quality assurance manual, marketing plan, business plan, orientation plan, directive, process or production line. The thesis project is a chance to show the skills that you have acquired during your studies. To become an expert, the student needs opportunities to solve authentic problems of the profession.

Specializing options

In the degree programme, you can specialize in either software factory or cloud systems and networking. You can choose your specialisation during the second study year.

In the software factory module, you will learn to master the most important programming languages and to learn how to use your expertise in real-life software development projects. You will learn to design web and mobile applications and practical skills on how to implement software that meets customer requirements. You will have access to our modern software development environments, where you will work with other students, customers and teachers to develop and deploy sustainable applications.

In the cloud systems and networking module, you will deepen your expertise in communications. You can participate in study modules offered by Cisco. During your studies, you deepen your know-how as an administrator and a developer of cloud services. As for the cloud services, you will familiarize yourself with the Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure environments and their certificates. You will have plenty of job opportunities in the future. Your future occupational titles could be, for example, a developer or administrator of data communications networks.

Student stories - Information Technology

Centria is not as big as other universities in bigger cities, but I think it's good for students to apply. We have good teachers, good curriculum and a friendly environment for studying.

This place feels like home!

I came from Serbia to study Information Technology. I am a slightly crazy and adventurous girl from Belgrade. I knew about the high quality of education in Finland, and after some online searching, I also found out about Centria.
The thing I like the most about my studies at Centria is the relationship with the teachers: I believe that they are there for me, they are so kind, and it feels like people here would go out of their way to support me.
During my studies, I have been studying so-called engineering basics during the two first years (physics, maths, logic, …. ) and now we are going deeper into professional courses, with programming and mobile software development. We have also been learning different programming languages. Throughout our classes, we have had many different kinds of projects; making games, webpages… working with people from different countries has been enriching and fun!

The Open University has given me the possibility to expand my knowledge by studying courses, which are not offered at Centria, such as medical engineering. I plan to apply to a Master’s programme in Biomedical Engineering, and both studies at Centria and the Open University courses have been supporting me in my plans.
Aside from my studies, I have been involved in the student union COPSA, being a student representative helping integrate international students. I am also working for the local volleyball club Kokkolan Tiikerit; I am their scout, which means that I code their moves at home games and gather data from them to provide statistics. The coach and players then use these figures to improve their game. This job combines everything I love: IT and volleyball!

To anybody considering studies in Finland or Centria, I would just say: take a leap of faith, you will not regret it! Immerse yourself in the Finnish culture, learn about the culture and habits, become a local like me!

All set towards my dream job!

I came to Finland because I was playing professional ice hockey and my career led me to Kokkola. Along with doing sports I was offered a job where I worked at for a one year before realizing that I wanted to use the opportunity of Finland’s free education system and there happened to be a university of applied sciences at Kokkola. I had a gap year after finishing high school, so I had a lot to prepare when applying to the university. Luckily the application process went well and I completed my entrance exams, and I got accepted at Centria.

Kokkola is a great town for students. It is a small city where all the places that students need are located close by and there is a great local community which will help if necessary.

Everyone has a dream job, and that’s also my case. I would really like to continue living in Finland, work in some Finnish IT company, perform well and advance in my career in the field of Information Technology. I know that in the future people will rely more and more on technology.

Centria offers studies in the field of Information Technology, which concentrate a lot on practical knowledge. Teachers with huge experience in IT are offering great and interactive teaching, which is really necessary because IT is such a technical field that hands-on experience is useful.
