It is an intrinsic part of life and you will find it in everything you see, experience or feel around and within yourself. Chemistry connects. Chemistry is a natural science that develops all the time and connects different fields and people. Chemistry is the most creative field on earth. How will we meet the demand of food, natural resources and energy for the growing population on earth? Clean water, renewable fuel and pharmaceuticals are chemistry.

- Chemical Industry Federation

The degree programme in Environmental Chemistry and Technology provides the student with a wide knowledge in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. You will get a holistic view on life-cycle thinking and material flows in industrial planning and other fields of society.

In your studies you will learn how plants should be planned, automatized and run safely for the environment - minimize environmental impact and methods of cleaning exhaust gases and wastewater as how to plan clean water plants.

Kokkola has the largest concentration of inorganic chemical industries in the northern countries, which gives the students an excellent ground for industrial careers. In the 21st century, Kokkola Industrial Park (KIP) and the whole of Kokkola have developed into a major chemical cluster. In the past five years, 413 million euros have been invested in the KIP area, employing more than 2,200 people. All in all, enterprises in the KIP area account for 5.3 per cent of the total exports of the Finnish chemical and metal industry. The region’s global corporations, leaders in their respective fields, have fine-tuned their process expertise to be at the top of the world in Kokkola.

The graduated engineers usually start their careers as research or development engineers in industrial projects. Some engineers start in production, purchase or sales tasks. National and local environmental authorities need engineers with knowledge in environmental questions. Some of our graduates end up working as teachers in vocational schools.

In the specialization option Environmental Chemistry and Technology the students will gain education in environmental issues like recycling of materials, production of energy, handling of wastewater, cleaning of air, planning of water plants, environmental management and process planning. The unique Chemplant pilot plant is used for learning of new techniques.

Our other specialization option is New and Traditional Fuel Production where the students learn about traditional oil refineries, but also about new methods for making renewable biofuels.

Student stories - Environmental Chemistry & Technology

Rahul KC Prabin Gautam Centria Amk

Studying in student-friendly environment

We are Rahul and Prabin from Nepal, and we are studying environmental chemistry and technology to be Bachelor of Engineering.

Rahul:

Since my childhood I was really interested in mathematics and science – that is my background.

Prabin:

I have already studied science in my high school, so I knew the basics of chemistry. But if you don’t have any background in chemistry, you will learn everything, even the basic things - you don’t need to worry about anything.

Rahul:

There are a lot of companies in Kokkola which we are going to visit. That also got me to think that I could work there in the future.

Prabin:

Every year we have five or six company visits at least, it is really great.

I did some research about Finland before I came here. I thought I was the only one from Nepal in Finland, but when I got here, I could see so many people from different countries. I feel like home in Finland – that is the best part for me.

If you are thinking about international, student-friendly environment, then you should come to Centria!

An unforgettable and wonderful studying time

I am starting my last year of studies at Centria, and I must say that I have enjoyed studying here! I think that the programme was well designed and all the know-ledge I have accumulated will serve me in my future career.

I believe that environmental problems are, and will continue to be, a serious issue on the global scale. It is the main reason I decide to pursue my studies in this field. I hope that I can contribute in the fight against pollution and help protecting the environment.

One of the biggest industrial parks in Northern Europe is located in Kokkola. There are many local companies dealing with environmental treatment. The teachers have connections to these companies and many of them have also been working in this
industry, which means that they can provide us students with real hands-on example and know-ledge from the working life. We therefore get practical know-ledge, which is backed up by theory.

Thanks to their connections, the teachers organize visits to the local companies and different kinds of activities and projects together with them. I very much appreciated being able to see in action the machinery which was mentioned in my books, for instance.

Kokkola is a quiet seaside and environmentally friendly city. I think a peaceful atmosphere is very suitable for studying, which is the case here at Kokkola! The landscapes are very beautiful, especially during the summer. It might not be a big city, but it has everything you need!

I think you will grow to love Kokkola pretty fast when you come here!
